School Psychologist Diagnostic Intern 

REPORTS TO: Special Education Coordinator/Principal 

DEPARTMENT: Student Services

 

POSITION OVERVIEW 

Under the supervision of a school psychologist, the school psychology intern provides school psychological services that enable all students to have access to an education program that meets their individual needs and enables them to excel to their greatest potential. The school psychology intern is responsible for coordinating and completing special education evaluations and determining eligibility for special education services, aligned to the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education compliance standards and indicators. 

 

EMPLOYMENT TERMS 

  • Employment terms covering compensation, benefits, and working conditions are specified by the Board of Education’s policies, procedures, and agreements.
  • Salary determined by the Board of Education
  • 10 month employment  is based on annual evaluation in accordance with this job description. 
  • FLSA Status: Exempt 

QUALIFICATIONS 

Education and Experience  

  • Current enrollment in a School Psychologist graduate degree program and graduate program approval to pursue internship position required. 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations 

  • A Temporary Authorization Certificate (TAC) in the area of School Psychology issued by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) required  

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES  

  • Under the supervision of an experienced and certified school psychologist, performs all job responsibilities of a school psychologist as assigned 
  • Participates in school-based Data and Problem Solving Leadership Teams
  • Facilitates use of appropriate data in meeting individual student needs, including benchmarking and progress monitoring 
  • Participates as a team member in the multidisciplinary evaluation process
  • Acts as consultant to component district staff, building level teams, and parents regarding academic/behavioral interventions for at-risk students, using data-driven decision-making 
  • Completes informal assessments to include observations, curriculum-based measurements, functional behavior assessments and other structured clinical tasks for at-risk students in the general education setting 
  • Administers formal assessment as part of a psycho-educational evaluation to determine student’s cognitive, academic, social/emotional/behavioral, and adaptive behavior functioning as appropriate 
  • Ensures that eligibility decisions are made in compliance with DESE criteria and best professional practice
  • Communicates and works collaboratively with stakeholders
  • Participates in IEP conferences, Section 504, and grade level/team meetings as requested, to provide input on appropriate goals and objectives for individual students and to help make determinations about reevaluation needs 
  • Completes Induction Academy training in the first year of employment.

Communication Skills 

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and policy and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to communicate effectively one-on-one and before groups 

Mathematical Skills  

  • Ability to collect and graph skill programming and behavior data, add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, decimals, and percentages 

Reasoning Skills

  • Ability to problem-solve and apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written and/or oral diagram form. Ability to follow simple or complex directions, ability to effectively organize and prioritize tasks 

Technical Skills

  • Computer/word processing skills. The ability to interact with a variety of technology platforms  

Physical Requirements 

  • While performing the duties and responsibilities of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear, stand, move and walk at a brisk pace, sit, and use hands and arms to handle, feel and reach. The position requires the ability to accompany students anywhere on school premises. The employee is occasionally required to stoop or kneel and occasionally lift and move up to 30 pounds. Additionally, the employee must be physically able to implement all Board of Education Policies, District procedures, and to perform Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training and techniques. The employee must be physically able to react and intervene quickly during crisis situations, such as but not limited to the following circumstances: student elopement, physical altercations involving students, or any situation that requires physical intervention to maintain student safety. Yearly NCI training with participation in physical intervention strategies is a requirement for the job 

Environmental Requirements

  • Able to move in and around school district buildings and campus locations. Transportation is required. Work is mainly completed indoors though occasional outdoor activities may be necessary   
  • There may be some instances where travel to different school sites or locations for training or district events is required.
